The remains of the Glendalough Monastic Site are located beside the Lower and Upper Lake and are one of the most popular tourist sites in Ireland. The original monastery, founded by St Kevin in the 6th century, was destroyed in the 14th century by English troops. A 33-metre 11th century round tower built to defend against Viking attacks and a Celtic High Cross, remain however.

Glenroe open farm is particularly popular with families, giving visitors the chance to feed and pet a wide range of pets and farm animals. One of the county’s top tourist attractions, it is also the setting for the TV series Glenroe. In addition to the scores of animals on show here there is also a nature walk, a children’s play area, a coffee shop, a gift shop and a secret garden that are all waiting to be explored.

One of the world’s great gardens is to be found in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains at Powerscourt Estate. The gardens date from the mid 18th century and stretch across 45 acres of statuary and ornamental lakes, walled gardens and hundreds of varieties of trees and shrubs. The house itself is equally impressive and a castle was first built here in 1300 but the building was changed considerably in the 18th century. The most recent refurbishment took place in 1996.

Russborough House is a magnificent 18th century mansion, and today contains the world famous Beit Collection of paintings. More specifically, the mansion was built in 1741 and took in the region of 10 years to complete. The house opened for public viewing in 1978 and contains the likes of the hall, the drawing room, the saloon, the library and the music room, with each offering an ornate and grand appearance.

Wicklow’s Historic Gaol is a new attraction in Wicklow town. The site has been occupied by a jail since 1702 and was operational until as late as 1924. The museum tells the story of the thousands of men, women and children imprisoned here over the centuries, taking you back in time as soon as you enter the door to meet a series of notorious characters.

The Wicklow Mountains National Park is one of the country's most beautiful regions. Covering much of the upland areas of County Wicklow, the park offers not only some of the most spectacular views anywhere in Ireland, but also an abundance of animal and plant life. The national park was established as such in 1991 and within the park you will also find tombs, rock art and standing stones that dates back many years.
