The Bull Ring is Wexford’s main town square and is named after the bull baiting that took place here in the 17th century. It is particularly famous as the place where the first declaration of the Irish Republic was made in 1798, to which a statue in the square is dedicated. Today a market takes place in this central Wexford location.

Enniscorthy Castle, dating from 1205, dominates the landscape of this charming town. The site of many fierce battles throughout the Cromwellian years and the 1798 Rebellion, today it also hosts the County Wexford Museum, which contains thousands of artefacts from significant events such as the 1798 Rebellion and the 1916 Easter Rising.

The Irish National Heritage Park is a 35-acre living-history park set on the banks of the River Slaney just outside of Wexford town. Providing visitors with an insight into Irish history from the Stone Age to the Norman invasion, guided tours bring the park to life and are popular with both children and adults alike. There is also a nature trail and interpretive centre.

The John F Kennedy Arboretum is a horticultural collection of international repute, covering 623 acres of the southern slope and summit of Slieve Coillte. The arboretum contains some 4,500 types of shrubs and trees from all around the world and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. There is also a lake at the arboretum as well as a visitor centre that puts on audiovisual displays and various other exhibitions.

Mount Leinster is the highest peak in the Blackstairs Mountains, which form the border between Counties Wexford and Carlow. The summit offers some of the finest panoramic views available in all of Ireland. Rising up 796 metres above sea level, Mount Leinster is good for hang-gliders and cycling while atop the peak is a television transmitter that can be seen for miles around.

Dating from the 12th century, Selskar Abbey has been the site of many synods and parliaments throughout Irish history and saw the signing of the first Anglo-Irish treaty in 1169. It is also reputedly the place where King Henry II did his penance for ordering the murder of Archbishop Thomas à Becket in 1172.

Constructed in the 13th century by Sir Stephen Devereux on instructions from King Henry to guard the approach to Wexford town, Westgate Heritage Tower presents a number of artefacts, restored guards’ accommodation and cells and a 30 minute audiovisual display. The heritage tower offers visitors the chance to explore and discover something about the past of the town of Wexford.

The Wexford Wildfowl Reserve is one of the richest ecological habitats for wild birds in Ireland and offers spectacular opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts. Among the species resident in the reserve are White-fronted Geese from Greenland. The Visitor Centre, meanwhile, contains an audiovisual show and many interesting exhibitions.
