Ballymote Castle, construction of which began in 1300, was the final and strongest of the Norman castles built in Connaught. Featuring a number of massive three-quarter round towers at each angle, Ballymote is the most symmetrical of all the Irish ‘keepless’ castles. It was captured by Williamite forces in 1690, who dismantled many of the castle’s defences and filled in the moat.

Located less than three miles from Sligo is Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Ireland’s largest collection of megalithic tombs. There is also a restored cottage which houses an exhibition on the site. Not only is this collection the largest, it is also the nation’s oldest collection of tombs, with some thought to be 6,500 years old. There are 60 tombs at the site, around half of which are visible.

This purpose built modern museum uses authentic artefacts and features to bring to life the harsh reality of the thousands of people who left Ireland looking for a better life in the New World. The museum stands on the site of Daniel Culkin’s Shipping and Emigration Agency, which operated from the 19th century up to the 1930’s.

A 700-metre long and 320-metre wide hill fort was discovered during archaeological excavations at County Sligo’s Knocknashee in 1988. Located on top of a limestone plateau overlooking the north Connacht plain, an area of 53 acres is enclosed by two earth and stone ramparts reaching a maximum height of 1.5 metres.

Lissadell House, located in the picturesque village of Drumcliffe, was the birthplace of Countess Constance Markievicz, Irish patriot and the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons at Westminster. With a spectacular setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean amid the rugged beauty of Ben Belben and Knocknarea, Lissadell House is a classic example of Greek revival architecture.

Constructed during the Neolithic period about 5,000 years ago, the cairn atop Knockarea is reputed to be the burial place of Queen Maeve, the Iron Age queen of Connacht. The site also offers spectacular panoramic views of the middens at Cullenamore and Ballisodare Bay.
