The Birr Castle Demesne has become famous around the world for its collection of exotic trees and plants, lakes, rivers and formal gardens stretching across 120 acres of a 17th century park. The Great Telescope is also to be found here. Built in 1845, it was the largest telescope in the world for more than 70 years.

As well as ramparts and towers, the compact castle is also home to a chapel, a former kitchen and some stables.
