Founded in 1216 by the King of Connacht, Ballintubber Abbey is the church that ‘refused to die’. Throughout its turbulent history attempts have been made to suppress Catholic worship at the site, but the abbey managed to survive and is today the only royal Abbey in Ireland which has been in continuous use for 800 years.

One of the most significant Stone Age settlements in the world is to be found at Céide Fields in Ballycastle. Visitors can see the stone-walled fields, megalithic tombs and even the foundations of a village. The pyramid mountain of Croagh Patrick is believed to be the site from which Saint Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland, one of the key moments in Irish Christian folklore and is, as a result, a site of pilgrimage for people from all over the country. The mountain is 764 metres high and is approximately eight kilometres from nearby town Westport.

Foxford Woollen Mills has rapidly become one of Ireland’s premier visitor attractions since opening in 1992. A tour of the mill takes visitors back in time to life in Foxford in the 1890s, with a visit to today’s working mill to see how the world famous blankets, rugs and tweeds continue to be made to this day.

The Granuaile Centre details the life of Grace O'Malley, known as the Pirate Queen. Living between 1530 and 1600, the centre provides an audiovisual presentation on her daring exploits and battles against the English. The centre also contains an exhibition on the Great Famine, during which Mayo lost more than 100,000 of its population to emigration and death.

Knock Shrine is one of the most visited sites in Ireland, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors each year. On August 21, 1879, 15 people claimed to have seen an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John. Ever since it has been a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world, with even Pope John Paul II himself having visited the site.

The Mayo North Heritage Centre is the place to go for anyone looking to trace their family history in County Mayo. Its databank provides access to records held in church registers, school records, leases, and wills. Situated on the edge of Ballina the centre is also home to a walled garden which produced organic vegetables, ferns, rockeries and a stone arch.

Westport House is a magnificent early 18th century Georgian mansion set amid beautiful parklands overlooking Clew Bay. Several rooms are open to the public, with artworks by James Arthur O’Connor, Chalon, Beechy, Barrett, Lavery, Gibson and Carver on display. Westport House has been open for public visits since 1960 with more than 4 million coming through its doors since that time.
