Abbeylara is a village in the east of County Longford full of ancient monuments to explore. The surrounding area contains the remains of several megalithic burial sites and two Bronze Age stone circles. The village was also home to a Cistercian monastery, the ruins of which mark the approach to the village.

The Ballinamuck Visitor Centre is located within the historic former Royal Irish Constabulary barracks in Ballinamuck and provides an exhibition on the 1798 Battle of Ballinamuck between the allied French and Irish forces and the British. The centre is situated 16 kilometres from the centre of Longford and visitors can also walk the field of the battle itself.

The Bogwood Sculpture Artists use bogwood, or wood preserved in bogs for thousands of years, to create sculptures. Using photos, videos and the finished pieces, they tell the story of how bogwood is formed. The wood comes from forests that once covered large swathes of central Ireland and the workshop that the artists use is found 25 kilometres to the south of Longford.

The remains of what is believed to be the largest motte and bailey castle in Ireland are located at Granard. Surrounded by a deep ditch and bank, in the centre stands a statue of St Patrick erected in 1932.
