Brandon Hill, the highest mountain in County Kilkenny.
County Kilkenny is one of the most picturesque and historic parts of Ireland. Stretching out from Ireland’s Medieval capital of Kilkenny, the county’s rich farmlands are dotted with ancient ruins, well-preserved castles and early Christian sites, making it one of the most fascinating and beautiful counties in the entire country.
The county is a genuine treat to explore. Its breathtaking river valleys, rich green pastures, gentle rolling hills and picture-postcard villages give visitors a glimpse of the real Ireland and one of the most memorable holiday experiences imaginable.
Visitors to Kilkenny simply must explore the countryside, which is the finest in Ireland’s south-east. Among the highlights are Jerpoint Abbey on the River Nore, which is one of Ireland’s most spectacular and historic Cistercian monastic sites. The beautiful village of Instigoe is also on the River Nore, with its stone bridge and tree-lined square creating a refined and genteel ambience.
Kells is another fascinating town in County Kilkenny, as it is the only completely walled medieval town that survives in Ireland. Its vast city walls, seven towers, and collection of historic monastic buildings make it an intriguing and picturesque place to spend a day.
But Kilkenny City is without doubt the place to visit above all others. As the Medieval capital of Ireland it boasts a heritage that few towns in Ireland can match. The city stands on the site of a 6th century priory founded by St Canice, from which the city and county takes its name. The city thrived in the Medieval period, growing into a prosperous walled city and a key government centre during the 14th century.
Thankfully, much of its Medieval architecture has been preserved, from the imposing castle to its churches and ancient narrow alleyways, while the city’s basic layout has changed little in the intervening 600 years.
With a multitude of unique craft studios, lively yet traditional pubs and warm and welcoming people, both in Kilkenny itself and across the county at large, County Kilkenny is one of the most beautiful and memorable locations to be found anywhere in Ireland.
