Constructed in the late 17th century on the site of a previous coastal fortification, Charles Fort is a superb example of a star-shaped fort featuring five bastions. Despite its small size this informative museum tells the story of Kinsale from its earliest days. It includes exhibits on the Battle of Kinsale and the Sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, the rescue effort for which was coordinated from Kinsale. The actual building in which the museum lies was built around 1600 although it was altered in the early 18th century.

Constructed between 1602 and 1604 opposite the town on the far shore of the Bandon River, James Fort is another classic example of star fort design. With 16-foot high walls, the inner fort remains in good condition. The fort stands opposite Charles Fort at the harbour’s mouth to create a difficult approach for any potentially invading forces.
