Today it is home to the International Museum of Wine, charting the castle's colourful past and the history of Ireland's links to the international wine trade. The castle has been used for a whole host of different purposes over the years but was transformed into a wine museum in 1997.

Despite its small size this informative museum tells the story of Kinsale from its earliest days. It includes exhibits on the Battle of Kinsale and the Sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, the rescue effort for which was coordinated from Kinsale. The actual building in which the museum lies was built around 1600 although it was altered in the early 18th century.

With 16-foot high walls, the inner fort remains in good condition. The fort stands opposite Charles Fort at the harbour’s mouth to create a difficult approach for any potentially invading forces.
