Ailwee Cave is one of the finest subterranean cave systems in Ireland and is one of County Clare’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can marvel at the vast caverns, stalactites and waterfalls, or climb the mountain for a glimpse of some of the county’s most spectacular scenery. It is possible to take tours around the cave which last around 30 minutes while at the end visitors can take a look in the shop for a souvenir.

The Brian Boru Heritage Centre charts the history of Celtic Ireland in County Clare, with interactive displays providing a wealth of information on the local area. There are also exhibits on the introduction of Christianity into the region and the development of the monastic tradition.
Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

Bunratty Castle is the most complete Medieval castle in Ireland and as a result is one of the country’s top tourist attractions. Constructed in 1425, the castle has a long and fascinating history. The Folk Park, meanwhile, recreates both rural and urban life in 19th century Ireland, with faithfully reconstructed farmhouses, a church, watermill and even a village street.

Caherconnell is one of the best preserved stone forts in Ireland, with stone walls reaching 14 feet in height. It is commonly believed to have been in use between 400 and 1200 AD, although recent evidence suggests it may have been occupied as late as the medieval period. The visitor centre, meanwhile, outlines the history and the realities of day to day life in these stone forts.

Clare Museum is found in a building in Ennis that was once the Sisters of Mercy school and chapel. The museum opened towards the end of the 20th century after some of the convent’s buildings were brought down in 1995. The museum explores the life and times of the County of Clare in west Ireland through temporary exhibits and those that remain for longer periods of time. A place of education and general interest, the museum is good for school trips as well as for families.
The Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher offer some of Ireland’s most spectacular coastal vistas, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Reaching a massive 214 metres high, on a clear day the Aran Islands and Galway Bay can be seen in the distance. The cliffs have been designated a special protection area thanks to the myriad sea birds that nest in the cliffs.

‘The Living Past' details the impact the arrival of the Celts had on Ireland and what life in an early medieval dwelling would have been like. Costumed animators also explain what day to day life would have been like in Ireland during this period. The project is found on a 50 acre site in Kilmurry in County Clare and Craggaunowen Castle is also found nearby.

There is a Franciscan Friary in Ennis which dates to the 13th century which has its origins in the town’s famous O’Brien family. Visitors are able to take tours around the friary to explore its ruined buildings and walls and they last for approximately 45 minutes. Conveniently, there is a car park onsite for coach groups or indeed for smaller group visits.
