The gardens at Altamount House date back to the 17th century and are some of the finest in all of Ireland. Filled with rare trees, shrubs and wildlife, the tended gardens lead down to the lake, creating some of the most beautiful and tranquil walks in County Carlow. As well as the finest, the 100-acre gardens are also known as the most romantic and so they have been given recognition as ‘the jewel in Ireland’s gardening crown’.

Ballymoon Castle is one of the earliest Anglo-Norman strongholds in Ireland and is found near the town of Carlow in the south-east of the country. Despite being in a relatively poor state of preservation, it remains one of the most impressive castles in the country, with its granite walls more than eight feet thick and some 20 feet high in places.

The Brownshill Dolmen is a portal tomb dating from around 2500 BC and is situated near to Carlow in County Carlow. The massive granite capstone weighs more than 100 tonnes and is believed to be the largest in Europe and is one of County Carlow’s premier tourist attractions. Listed as a national monument, the tomb is distinctive in appearance.

The 13th century Carlow Castle was once one of the foremost castles in the region. It has a long history, having changed hands many times and eventually being captured by Cromwell in 1650. Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed during the 18th century by a doctor who was attempting to transform it into a lunatic asylum.

The Carlow County Museum takes visitors on a trip back through 19th and 20th century life in Carlow and the surrounding areas using displays in the form of shop layouts. It also features a number of historical artefacts discovered in the local area and it is now home to over of 4,000 items and features.

Huntington Castle is a 17th century construction built on the site of an earlier defensive fortification. Inside it is filled with a number of dark, atmospheric rooms featuring collections of tapestries, suits of armour and family portraits. It is believed to be haunted by the forms of several monks from the monastery which once stood on the site and by the spectre of a soldier who once garrisoned the castle.
